CQC State of Care Report
The Care Quality Commission has published its annual review of health and adult social care in England. The "state of care" report, (based on a new ratings system introduced in the past year across all sectors CQC regulates) states that more than 80% of GP practices, 60% of adult social care services and 38% of the hospitals inspected so far have been rated as good or outstanding. However, alongside these encouraging findings, there remains significant variation in quality and an unacceptable level of poor care. Up to 31 May 2015, 7 per cent of acute, primary medical and adult social care services had been rated as inadequate.

Outcomes Based Commissioning Improving Services for the Over 65's
Dear Patient Carer and Resident      TAKE THE SURVEY
NHS Croydon CCG and Croydon Council are working together to deliver a new approach to commissioning services for people over 65, known as Outcomes Based Commissioning (OBC).
Our aim is to transform the way services are provided by putting what matters most to older people and their families at the heart of everything we do. In order to do this we need your views.
Please take a moment to fill in our survey and give us important feedback that will help improve these local services. The survey deadline is Friday 16th October 2015.

ABOUT 112

Need help? 112 is your life-saving number!

112

112 is the European emergency phone number, available everywhere in the EU, free of charge.

It is possible to call 112 from fixed and mobile phones to contact any emergency service: an ambulance, the fire brigade or the police.

When a person dials 112, a specially trained operator will answer the call. Depending on the national organisation of emergency services, the operator will either deal with the request directly or transfer the call to the most appropriate emergency service.

Operators in many countries can answer the calls not only in their national language, but also in English or French. If the caller does not know where he is, the operator will identify where the person making the call is physically located and will pass it to the emergency authorities so that these can help immediately.

112 operators do not provide traffic and weather reports, general information or answers to queries. Calling 112 as a joke or calling and then hanging up is considered a hoax call. Hoax calls not only waste the time and money of the emergency operators, but can also be dangerous. If 112 lines or call operators are busy with hoax calls, someone with a real emergency may not be able to get the help needed. In most countries, it is a criminal offence to make hoax 112 calls and a person can be judged for that.

112 does not replace the existing (UK 999) national emergency number. In most countries, it operates alongside them. However, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Malta and Romania have opted for 112 as their main national emergency number.

Did you know that it is usual for adults to have two to four colds a year while children are likely to have three to eight as their immune system is more susceptible to viral infections? That's why, during winter, when seasonal illnesses are more frequent, it is important to take extra measures to stay well.

As part of Self Care Week 2014, we encouraged people to choose healthy lifestyle options that will impact positively on their physical health, mental wellbeing and self esteem. Help to maintain health and ward off illness by eating sensibly, stop smoking, drinking in moderation and taking regular exercise.

The Self Care Week message was "Self care for life - be healthy this winter".

However, if you do fall sick with a winter ailment, we want to make sure you are able to look after yourself at home safely. Here are a few facts about colds and flu:

  • Most cold and flu symptoms can be treated safely at home without the need for a GP;
  • If you want advice a pharmacist can help or access information from a reputable source such as NHS Choices or Self Care Forum fact sheets;
  • Coughs can last three to four weeks;
  • In adults and older children, cold symptoms last for about a week and a half, and in younger children for up to two weeks. Symptoms are usually worst in the first two to three days, before they gradually start to improve.
  • You can catch a cold by either breathing in droplets of fluid containing the cold virus (when someone sneezes), or by touching something that someone has sneezed on, and then touching our mouth or nose.
  • Paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin can help reduce the symptoms of a cold. Avoid giving aspirin to children under the age of 16 and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Talk to your pharmacist about supplements that may help ease your symptoms.
  • Most colds are not serious and get better by themselves. Contact your GP surgery for advice or call NHS 111 if you develop a high temperature (above 39°C or 102.2°F), which can be a sign of a more serious type of infection;
  • Most colds get better on their own without treatment, antibiotics are ineffective for treating the common cold and may cause side effects.
  • Your sore throat is likely to get better within 3 to 7 days (and a maximum of 2 weeks) without the need for treatment by a health professional. Most sore throats last for an average of eight days.
  • If you have a long term condition and contract a cold or flu don't forget to take your regular medication and speak to the pharmacist about contraindications with over the counter medicines.
